Ganesh, the Remover of Obstacles
For anyone contemplating a major trek in Nepal, I recommend owning Lonely Planet's Trekking in the Nepal Himalaya. It is full of good information, trip preparations, clothing, first aid, currency, permits etc. Steven Bezruchka's Trekking in Nepal describes Nepali customs and attitudes in detail. From it we can learn how to behave respectfully towards those in whose home and country we are blessed to be able to travel.

All of the following books can greatly enhance your Nepal experience, as well as being excellent books in their own right.

  • The Velvet Shyness of their Eyes - by Barbara Scott
  • Annapurna - by Maurice Herzog
  • Aama in America ~ A Pilgrimage of the Heart - by Broughton Coburn
  • Rhythms of a Himalayan Village - by Hugh R. Downs
  • Annapurna Circuit - by Andrew Stevenson
  • Himalayan Passage - by Jeremy Schmidt
  • The Light at the Edge of the World - by Wade Davis
  • The Climb - by Anatoly Boukreev
  • Any of Eric Shipton or Bill Tilman's Himalayan Books
  • Touching my Father's Soul - Jamling Tenzing Norgay
  • Chomolungma Sings the Blues - by Ed Douglas
  • Footsteps in the Clouds ~ Kanchenjunga a Century Later - by Baiba and Pat Morrow
  • The Snow Leopard - by Peter Mattheson
